The Christ of Ossip Zadkine

  • The Christ of Ossip Zadkine

Since 1954, the Gothic church in Caylus has been home to a monumental Christ. Carved from the trunk of an elm tree, this Christ is the work of the Russian artist Ossip Zadkine, recognised as one of the undisputed masters of contemporary sculpture. He was a friend of some of the greatest artists of his time, including Chagall, Fernand Léger and Modigliani. Foujita, the famous Japanese painter from Montparnasse, was his best man at his wedding. This Christ leaves no visitor, believer or atheist, indifferent. This Christ has disproportionate limbs. Suspended by a single arm from a non-existent cross, this Christ does not have the cloth around his loins to reveal his nakedness. As soon as it was installed in the church in Caylus, the sculpture was widely criticised, by some as indecent, and by others as blasphemous.
