Loze

The commune of Loze, formerly in the Lot département, was attached to the Tarn-et-Garonne in 1808. Situated in the far east of this department, it belongs to the canton of Caylus and the Quercy Rouergue Gorges de l'Aveyron Community of Communes. Loze borders Saint-Projet, Puylagarde, Parisot and Lacapelle-Livron. Covering an area of 1,105 hectares, Loze has a permanent population of around 129. The commune lies on the borders of Quercy and Rouergue, between a limestone causse and a terrefort, separated by the river Bonnette. To the west, the limestone plateau, lined with low walls and dotted with dry-stone huts, bears witness to a land that was once farmed and grazed by sheep, and is now wooded with pedunculate oaks. The thin soils reveal the parent rock, creating a typical karstic landscape. The Bonnette valley crosses the commune from north to south, providing a green contrast to the aridity of the causse. The plateau breaks abruptly above the valley, where the river brings a sudden freshness and fertile alluvium, contrasting with the discontinuous and uncultivated arable land of the causse. To the east, the landscape is hilly and hedged, with meadows surrounded by hedges. The land is often heavy and impermeable, making it difficult to work. Once used for growing rye, it is now dominated by forage crops, meadows and cattle farming.
