Discover the surprising and innovative music of this medieval nun, presented at the heart of Beaulieu-en-Rouergue Abbey. Presentation
At a time when the Gothic style was in full bloom and the era of cathedrals was beginning in the West, an extraordinary woman put down on paper music of breathtaking freedom. Hildegard, this German nun, abbess, mystic, scholar, founder and writer with a fiery character, composed her symphony of celestial harmonies during the 12th century. "Notre Dame" remains her ideal and, taking up a term sung in the Gregorian tradition, she illuminates it with her notes in her song addressed to the mother of medicine: "Stella Maris" - Star of the Sea - forms the thread of this programme.
This concert is devoted to Hildegard's music and its Gregorian roots. Two instrumentalists improvise around songs sung on instruments from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, to prolong the indisputable benefits of this invigorating music. Just as the composer cared for visitors to her guesthouse, with strength and gentleness, so her music, by touching the depths of the soul, cares for her listeners.
